In addition to the book awards, Glyph Awards were presented for Excellence in Publishing, Embodying Arizona, Most Valuable Person and Korwin Award for Visionary Leadership. Here are two stories to validate that statement: While checking a Wal-Mart on Wednesday, a man walked into the magazine section while talking on his cell phone. I overheard him say, "...They have a Tucson street guide, but it's not like the one I have. Do you want me to get it for you anyway? The one I have is a lot better." The "street guide" he was referring to was, of course, the Rand McNally Tucson atlas. After a brief pause he said, "Well, there's a map store on First Avenue, I KNOW they will have it. I'll just go there to get it. You're definately going to want the one like I have." He was, of course, referring to Tucson Map & Flag, which is about a mile from the Wal-Mart we were in at that time. As I checked out of my hotel on Thursday morning, a gentleman approached me and asked where I could by a Tucson atlas, "like the one that you have pictured on your van." He has evidently seen the van in the hotel lot and noticed my WWM shirt. He asked, "Is there a Wal-Mart nearby where I could get it?" The closest Wal-Mart to the hotel was one I had already checked with zero inventory and since I wasn't confident at this point that any of the Wal-Marts would have any atlases on hand (as turned out to be the case) I suggested Costco or Sam's. He didn't have a membership for either, so instead I referred him to Tucson Map & Flag, which wasn't too far from the hotel. He was in Tucson on business, and needed an atlas for when he works there. He lives in Ahwatukee and told me he tried to buy our Phoenix atlas in the Wal-Mart on Elliot Road in Tempe, but they never have it in stock. Instead, he told me, he drove into Mesa to buy it at our store, "even though it was a bit father to drive." He says he owns and uses our Pinal and Yavapai atlases as well. The StreetPilot was/is unbelievable. It's right on target 95% of the time (the other 5% it's close to target). Estimated savings in fuel are at least 30-40%.
