Rick Steves' Eastern Europe DVD-Video
Join host Rick Steves on a three-hour trek across travel’s “new frontier” — Eastern Europe — in six half-hour “Rick Steves’ Europe” TV shows. In Poland, you’ll rediscover Krakow’s Baroque past, Prague’s renaissance, and the powerful lessons of Auschwitz. In Prague, you’ll dive into Europe’s liveliest street scene, and take a small-town side trip to Kutna Hora. To the south, Slovenia’s Julian Alps will tempt you to look up “Liubljana” in your atlas, and Adriatic jewels like Dubrovnik will have you dreaming of Croatian destinations. In Budapest, you’ll see how communism has become kitsch, and in Bulgaria you’ll time-trip to a world of donkey karts and hidden monasteries. Your eastern trek ends in Turkey, where friendly folk traditions and ancient mysteries mingle with modern hopes and dreams. As a bonus, you’ll chuckle over accidental outtakes from Rick’s TV series.
Poland Rediscovered: Krakow, Auschwitz, and Warsaw: The old “east” is transforming itself into the new heart of Europe. Krakow, with its bubbly Baroque and cobbled charm, is emerging as the exciting “next Prague.” A visit to Auschwitz teaches us a timeless, soul-searching lesson. And Warsaw — systematically destroyed during World War II — is a lively, thriving capital once again.
Prague and the Czech Republic: Newly energized Prague has Europe's best beer, biggest castle, liveliest pedestrian bridge, and most evocative Jewish Quarter. Rick side-trips to Kutna Hora, and ponders its eerie chapel, decorated centuries ago with 40,000 bones.
Slovenia and Croatia: Dubrovnik is still the "jewel of the Adriatic." Nearby villages decorate their dreamy archipelago with small-town Venetian charm. Ljubljana is like Salzburg without tourists. The Julian Alps glisten with pristine lakes, and Lipizzaner stallions are eager to strut their stuff.
Budapest: The Best of Hungary: Budapest, once Vienna's partner in ruling the Austro-Hungarian empire, feels like the capital of Eastern Europe. Capitalism has taken hold with gusto as shopping boulevards thrive and stone Lenins litter a theme park at the edge of town. Nineteenth century coffeehouses are suddenly hip, and Gypsy orchestras feature smoking violins.
Surprising Bulgaria: Bulgaria is a time warp of old and new-from chic shops in the city to donkey cars in the country. Rick hikes to a mountain monastery, meets two sculptors (dad does Stalin, son does nudes), and enjoys a traditional dinner feast at a local home.
Eastern Turkey: After a Mount Ararat sunrise, Rick visits Abraham's 4000-year-old home town, tours one of the world's biggest dams, cheers on grease wrestlers, meets the gods atop Mount Nemrut, and dances with new friends in a village.
Outtakes, Seasons 1 & 2: On location, it's just another day at the office: Rick bangs his head, muffs his lines, gets stuck in the mud, and left in the dark.
