Hunt Unit 23 offers a variety of habitats; from the high mountain ponderosa pine forest, to the rolling hills of the pinyon juniper belts, into the grasslands, & down to the Sonoran Desert. This highly prized unit lies almost entirely within the Tonto National Forest, along with small pockets of private land. Hunt Unit 23 offers trophy big game hunting for elk, mule deer, whitetail, desert bighorn, & javelina, and also good hunting for black bear, mountain lion, & turkey. Furthermore, there are great opportunities for small game such as bobcat, coyote, fox, cottontail rabbit, squirrel, & more. Additionally, because of the numerous lakes along the Salt and Verde River system, it provides excellent waterfowl & fishing potential. Waterfowl species include Canadian geese, mallards, mergansers, blue-winged teal, northern pintail, & more. Gamefish species in the lakes include largemouth bass, smallmouth bass, catfish, & crappie, while rainbow & brown trout are found in the higher elevations along with various other species. Due to the primitive nature of the roads combined with weather conditions, access demands 4×4 off-road vehicles in order to safely venture throughout the unit. Please be mindful that there are numerous reasons why some road restrictions exist within National Forests.
