Arizona Hunt Unit 04B Hunting/Recreation Map
Hunt Unit 4B is another spectacular Arizona region that offers various habitats. Its southern region lies in the heart of Arizona’s famed Mogollon Rim offering some of the most scenic & breathtaking views dominated by timbered mountains and numerous canyons. Areas over 7600 ft such as Larson Ridge and Weimer Point are found throughout the Southwestern region which drop into its numerous canyons. The cedar juniper belt in its central region eventually courses down to lower elevations of the high grasslands in the northern sections of the boundary.
The Grand Canyon State has been divided into Hunt Units otherwise known as Game Management Units (GMU). Each of these units can contain state, federal, military, and private land, and the boundaries serve to assist the Arizona Game and Fish Department and the Arizona Game and Fish Commission in managing wildlife within its boundaries. Although these references seem specific to wildlife and hunting, each unit's boundaries can be helpful to any outdoor enthusiast whether you are hiking, biking, off-roading, boating, or camping.
Game Management Unit 4B offers trophy big game hunting for elk, mule deer, antelope, black bear, mountain lion, and turkey with abundant opportunities for small game such as bobcat, coyote, fox, cottontail rabbit, squirrel, and more.
Because of the numerous lakes, water tanks, rivers, and streams, Hunt Unit 4B provides excellent waterfowl and fishing potential. Waterfowl species include Canadian geese, mallards, mergansers, blue-winged teal, northern pintail, and more.
Gamefish species in the high elevations lakes and streams include rainbow and brown trout. The three most popular lakes are Chevelon Canyon, Woods Canyon, and Willow Springs which facilitate camping, boating, hiking, and fishing for trophy-sized trout.
Hunting Unit 4B lies partly within the Sitgreaves National Forest in the southern half of the region with BLM, State, and private lands in its northern region.
For the hiker, Unit 4B offers several trails in the southwest region. Trails run around the lakes of Woods Canyon, Willow Springs, and Chevelon Canyon while breathtaking views can be found along the General Crook Trail which traverses along the Mogollon Rim at the southern border of this unit.
AZ Hunt Unit 4B off-road opportunities are found throughout with miles upon miles of trails; a high clearance 4×4 vehicle is mandatory due to primitive roads and weather conditions. Please check the appropriate National Forest Service for their restrictions before your adventure. Roads open and close without notice. Please observe and respect road signs.
Remember that public lands are subject to leasing and other changes. It is advised to obtain local and forestry information from a Forest Service office or other public land agency. Contact the appropriate land management agency for the most current information.
