Discover Las Cienegas National Conservation Area! This expansive landscape, with its desert grasslands and rolling, oak-studded hills surrounded by "sky island" mountain ranges, is not what you might expect to see in southern Arizona. Six types of ecosystems are represented within this 42,000-acre block of now-protected public land: cienegas (marshland), cottonwood/willow, sacaton grassland, mesquite bosques, semi-desert grassland, and oak woodlands, each with its own characteristic plant and animal life.
The Bureau of Land Management's (BLM) National Landscape Conservation System protects some of the most remarkable public land in the American West. National Conservation Areas (NCA) are designated by Congress to conserve, protect, enhance, and manage selected public lands for the benefit and enjoyment of present and future generations.
