Functional wood objects have existed from the beginning of man's first involvement with carving wood, probably since the dawn of civilization all over the world. Extant fragments indicate that in the Middle Kingdom, and more particularly during the eighteenth and nineteenth dynasties, cabinetmaking attained a new excellence. Chairs, chests, and other articles of furniture were often elaborately decorated with veneer, inlay, and marquetry - all techniques still widely used today.
